A COUPLE who met and fell in love when they arrived in Britain for a new life have celebrated their golden wedding.
John and Giovanna Wozniak, of Armitage Road, Birkby, met at a dance in Dewsbury.
Giovanna had just arrived in England from Cassino in Italy with her three sisters.
All the girls worked in the former Britannia Mill in Mirfield.
John was among a large number of Ukrainian emigrants who had settled in West Yorkshire.
He worked for a short time in Scotland and then took a job at a mill in Cleckheaton, before moving to work for many years in the foundry at the Hopkinsons factory in Birkby.
The couple have one daughter and four grandchildren.
Both are regulars at the Italian Club, which meets at the St Patrick's Centre in Huddersfield. They celebrated their anniversary with a family meal.
