MORE matrons have signed up to boost hospital care.

The Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust has appointed five new matrons to strengthen its team of top-level experienced nurses across all areas of care.

There are now 25 matrons – including six night matrons – at the trust as part of a Government drive to see the return of matrons to wards.

The matrons at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary and the Calderdale Royal Hospital in Halifax wear a new distinctive dark blue uniform with red trim to heighten their profile to staff, patients and the public.

All have a broad nursing background and experience as well as specialising in key areas of patient care. Their roles include team leadership, liaison with patients and their families and taking the lead on infection prevention and control.

Director of nursing Helen Thomson said: “The trust was very pleased to increase our team of matrons and to be able to introduce their broad experience and high-level specialist knowledge into more areas of patient care.’’

Ms Thomson added: “The role of the matron is central to the successful delivery of quality healthcare on the wards.”
