A WOMAN who serves many voluntary and charitable groups is to be the next Mayor of Kirklees.
Clr Mary Harkin will take up her role at the council's annual meeting on June 30.
She has been a Labour councillor for Batley East for 14 years.
Her grandfather was a councillor in Batley and her husband, Gerald, is a relative of the family of an ex-mayor of Batley.
They have a daughter, a son and two grand- children.
Clr Harkin said: "I am immensely proud to have been nominated by the Labour group to be the next mayor."
She is a governor of Dewsbury College and Park Road Primary School in Batley.
She is also a member of voluntary and charitable groups, including Batley Family and Community Resource Centre and Dewsbury and District Society for the Blind.
The deputy mayor will be Colne Valley Lib Dem Clr Margaret Fearnley.
She is a member of Marsden Mechanics committee and a director of Colne Valley Trust.
She was a ward sister at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary's ophthalmic department.
