NEW measures should ensure a town's funfair passes off smoothly, say council officials.

Cleckheaton Fair opens on Thursday next week.

Stalls and rides will take over the town centre car park for six days.

Kevin Kendall, Kirklees Council's head of building control and licensing, said: "We have been in close consultation with the fair operators, the police and local councillors to deal with any local concerns.

"The fair operators have been very co-operative in their desire to ensure the fair runs smoothly, with the minimum inconvenience and to provide the maximum amount of enjoyment for local people.

"There will be additional security during the period and the fair will close at 9.30pm each night."

Further discussions are continuing about the fair, which comes to Cleckheaton again in October.
