A NEW recycling scheme to keep plastic coffee packaging out of landfill sites has been launched.

The latest green scheme, set up by Kenco and TerraCycle, is called the Coffee Packaging Brigade.

Collection boxes are being installed across the country including one in Lindley and another at Highburton.

Local people can drop off their packaging at the Motherhub community group premises above the Nightingale pub in Acre Street, Lindley, or at the Highburton Village Store in Moor Lane.

For each piece of waste recycled 2p will be donated to Motherhub and Kirkburton Pre-School respectively.

Any brand of plastic coffee packaging can be dropped off.

Items that can be recycled include waste coffee refill bags, coffee bean bags, single serving coffee sachets and coffee jar lids.

Coffee packaging waste can be recycled into plastic products such as park benches, watering cans and waste bins.

Motherhub founder and chairman, Katy Livings, who organised the Lindley collection point, said: “It’s great that Huddersfield people will be amongst the first to take part in this scheme.”

The Motherhub collection point is open from noon-11pm Monday to Thursday and on Sundays, and from noon to midnight on Friday and Saturday.

Opening times in Highburton are 7am-8pm Monday to Saturday and 9am-6pm on Sunday.

Stephanie Okell, brand manager for Kenco, said: “We encourage local people to really get behind the scheme to not only make a difference to the local environment but also to raise money for local community groups”.
