ANOTHER top scientist has joined the University of Huddersfield.

Prof Susan Kilcoyne is the new Professor of Biomaterials.

She is the fifth professorial appointment in the discipline in the last two years and will work alongside colleagues in the university’s International Institute of Accelerator Applications.

The Institute brings together research in accelerator science and engineering, from low energy devices in its own laboratories to the highest energy machines at sites around the world, including the Large Hadron Collider in Cern, Switzerland, and the European Spallation Source in Lund, Sweden.

Prof Kilcoyne will work on projects that include advising archaeologists on the uses of modern scientific techniques for the interpretation of ancient artefacts, researching the best possible bio-materials from which to create artificial teeth and analysing the presence of iron in just about all of the planet’s living things.

Prof Kilcoyne comes to Huddersfield from the University of Salford, where her last appointment was Associate Dean for Research and Innovation.

Her principal teaching role will initially be the training of students to become researchers in the field.

But one of her broader roles at Huddersfield will be to add to the university’s reputation for research excellence.

“There are areas of research here that will stand up to scrutiny against any university in the country,” she said.
