DISCOUNT retailer Wilkinson is creating 80 jobs with a new store at Brighouse.

The company, which has a store at New Street in Huddersfield, is moving into a former supermarket building at Briggate.

Work is now under way to refurbish the 18,000sq ft outlet, which should open next spring.

Wilkinson sells products ranging from sweets, stationery and shampoo to clothes, gardening tools and wallpaper.

The new jobs will include management and supervisory staff, checkout operators and warehouse posts.

The announcement follows an agreement between Wilkinson and Tesco, which holds the lease on the Briggate site. The supermarket giant left the site in 2003 to move to new premises at Clifton Road.

The Briggate store has parking for about 100 cars.

Wilkinson has 244 stores UK-wide, including 22 in Yorkshire.
