HUDDERSFIELD was last night included in a new television channel.

Culture secretary Jeremy Hunt yesterday announced the 26 towns and cities which had won the right to set up their own stations.

Leeds was one of the successful bids. The new station will cover Huddersfield, Dewsbury, Halifax and Wakefield as well.

Other winners from the 65 applicants included Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Norwich and Nottingham.

Some £40m has been taken from the BBC to fund the channels’ start-up costs, but the Government hope the new stations will be self-financing within three years.

The first new channels are expected to be on-air by next summer.
