COUNCIL house tenants in Kirklees will be able to pop down to the shop or garage to pay their rent.

Businesses displaying the PayPoint sign will accept money in a newly- agreed system.

Council tax payments will also be accepted.

Cliff Whiteley, chairman of Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing, said: "We are trying to make it as easy as we can for our residents to pay their rent or council tax and this will enable them to pay while they are doing their shopping.

"The system is secure and the payment will be credited to their account within a few days.

"The system is very well used by other large organisations and many people pay their gas and electric bills this way already."

Payments can be made anywhere in the country at any shop displaying the PayPoint sign - a move designed to help people who settle bills for elderly relatives.

Anyone who wants a payment card should contact Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing on 01484 223262 or Kirklees Council on 01484 414941.
