HAPPY couple Jean and Bryan Woodhead will mark 60 years of marriage with a game of bowls.

The Newsome couple are keen bowlers and they celebrated the milestone on Thursday.

They met as teenagers when they lived in the Lowerhouses area. Both attended a youth group at St Mary’s Church.

They were married at Almondbury Parish Church in 1951 after Mr Woodhead returned from service.

A member of the Royal Navy, he served in Malta and Gibraltar from 1946 until 1949.

Mr Woodhead, 83, and Mrs Woodhead, 82, have two daughters, Jill and Judith, and two grandchildren, Christopher and Nicholas.

Mr Woodhead worked as foreman and quality control at Thomas Broadbent’s and his wife was a telephonist and cashier at Wheatley Dyson’s and Huddersfield Building Society.

She is captain of the Primrose Hill Ladies Bowling Team, a member of Newsome Church and its Mothers’ Union and she also knits clothes for the premature babies at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary. Her husband is president of the Huddersfield Veterans Bowling Association and the Primrose Hill Bowling Club.

They celebrated their anniversary at a party with friends and relatives.
