A NEWSOME man has appeared in court after ignoring an order not to drink booze in public.

John Greenwood, of Edale Avenue, pleaded guilty to breaching the terms of his anti-social behaviour order.

He admitted drinking outside Huddersfield railway station when he appeared before Kirklees magistrates.

Niall Carling, prosecuting, said that the 62-year-old’s antics in the afternoon of August 14 were caught on camera.

He said: “He was spotted on CCTV camera outside the station consuming alcohol.

“As a result of this officers attended and he was arrested for breaching his ASBO conditions.”

Greenwood admitted to police that the had been drinking from a can of Special Brew on the station steps.

He was given the order at the court on April 3 this year.

The Huddersfield bench were told that since then Greenwood had already breached the order twice.

Mike Sisson-Pell, defending, said: “He met with friends on the station steps, there was a hint of sunshine and one of his friends passed him a can.

“The difficulty for people like Mr Greenwood is that the CCTV staff at Flint Street all have pictures of him and his friends.

“As soon as a can is cracked open police are notified and that leads to his arrest.

“When you are dealing with intellectually challenged people who have a problem with drink, breaches of court orders are going to happen.

“Police give fixed penalties for kicking someone in the head in the street but arrest someone for having a slurp of beer.”

Magistrates were told that Greenwood promised that he would stick to his order in future.

Mr Sisson-Pell added: “I’ve told him that eventually the court will lose patience with him.”

Magistrates fined Greenwood £150 and ordered him to pay £85 court costs as well as £15 victim surcharge.

They warned him that he faces jail if he continues to breach his order.
