A COUNTRY restaurant has been badly hit by fire.
A blaze in a storeroom at Orlando's Italian Restaurant, Grange Moor, spread to the kitchen.
The restaurant - on Wakefield Road, next to the Grange Moor roundabout - is now closed until further notice.
Owner Orlando Gubbini has revealed how the drama unfolded on Sunday night.
"I locked up and left at 11.45pm and had driven to Waterloo when my mobile phone went off.
"It is linked directly to the restaurant's alarm system and the restaurant number flashed up.
"I turned round and went straight back to find the alarm ringing.
"When I opened the main door, smoke billowed out."
The fire had started in a staff changing room and storeroom at the back of the restaurant.
Tablecloths and napkins were stored there and the fire took hold and spread to the kitchen.
Mr Gubbini fought it with buckets of water until firefighters arrived.
He said: "The fire door certainly worked to stop the flames spreading to the main restaurant.
"If the alarm system had not automatically alerted me and I was able to get there quickly, I feel sure I would have lost the entire building."
He added: "Fire investigators are still trying to pinpoint the cause and a full assessment of the damage is going on.
"But it looks like the kitchen will need completely replacing."
