A war veteran will help mark Golcar Lily Day next week.

A Battle of Britain flypast will commemorate World War II heroes on May 9.

Those visiting Golcar will witness a stirring display when a Lancaster Bomber from the famed Battle of Britain memorial flight flies past.

The flight will be the headline attraction at Golcar Lily Day, which will this year take place the day after VE Day.

But it will be just one of dozens of activities due to take place at the one day event, which this year will take place for the ninth time.

This year themed around gifted Golcar residents, the event will kick off at 10am in Jubilee Square with a formal opening by Winkle Club member , military veteran and oil well worker Alex Burley and Elizabeth Berry, whose father was the last owner of the Golcar Ritz cinema.

Lively musical performances will create a festival atmosphere throughout the day both in public spaces and in six venues around the village, including all its churches.

This will include Golcar Band, Huddersfield University Big Band and performances by 10 different groups and music schools. All visitors will be encouraged to get dancing in the streets with the several dance troupes booked for the day.

On the bill is morris and maypole dancing along with many others.

Crafts will take over the Colne Valley Museum on Cliffe Ash, the Scout and Community Centre on Manor Road and the Drop By shop on Sycamore Avenue, while a story teller will set children’s imaginations’ alive at Golcar Library on Town End.

And the whole centre will be decorated with knitted tree cosies and examples of local children’s work to celebrate the creative skills and talent in the community.

The anticipated Lancaster Bomber fly past will take place at 2.25pm.

And to end the day, a tug of war will take place at 4pm, which will take place on Golcar Junior and Infants School field on Manor Road.

Anyone wishing to take part in the event can turn up with a team on the day.

One of the event’s organisers, Susan Starr, said: “We are looking forward to enjoying our ninth Golcar Lily Day, which will be a particularly good weekend to be celebrating as it coincides with VE day.

“We always say we don’t care what the weather is like as we will have a great time in Golcar but this year we would like a good day because of our promised fly past.

“ We also have a wide variety of stalls and of course there will be plenty of good food, so come along to find out more.

“We will be running free buses to help visitors get around the village so they can enjoy all the attractions we will have on offer.”
