A NEW team of "noise- busters" are to hit the streets of Huddersfield.

Kirklees Council staff are to work on Friday and Saturday nights, using new equipment to try and stop the noise menace.

And the pilot scheme could well be extended to a third night if it is successful.

People caught creating noise will be given warnings.

If they carry on they could be handed instant £100 fines or possibly be taken to court.

Equipment, including sound systems and alarms, could be confiscated.

The Night Time Noise Service to investigate complaints is being launched by the council's Environmental Services.

The first teams will be in action next Friday, visiting homes and business premises, as well as investigating house and car alarms.

A hotline is being set up for people to call the teams.

Clr Ann Denham, the council Cabinet member with responsibility for the environment and highways, said: "With the increasing popularity of powerful hi-fi systems and house and car alarms, we are exposed to increasing noise. Yet our tolerance of noise is lower.

"Noise at night is particularly disturbing and can cause interrupted sleep, high levels of stress and, ultimately, ill-health."

Clr Denham added: "We hope the new service will provide a reliable and efficient response that will reduce the effects of night-time noise."

The service will also be available on Sunday nights over bank holiday weekends.

The new service is in addition to the standby service, which for many years has dealt with emergency environmental health problems and continuing nuisance investigations.

From next Friday the new service will be available on 01484 416600. It will operate from 9pm to 7am.

In Leeds, a similar service saved 1,940 hours of police time, equivalent to an estimated £47,000.

But police will still be called out if problems persist.
