NOISE-busters at Kirklees Council received 28 calls during their first weekend on duty.

A team of environmental health officers were on call over Friday and Saturday night, between 9pm and 7am, with new hand-held noise detectors.

Anyone found infringing noise limits was liable to an on-the-spot fine.

Andrew Cannon, the council's environmental health manager, said: "We had a combination of domestic noise, car alarms and burglar alarms.

"It was pretty much what we would expect. They were kept busy throughout the hours they were on duty.

"They will have to see how it goes over the next few weeks," he added.

Mr Cannon said it was planned to extend the service to three nights on a weekend some time.

"In the summer time it is likely that we will operate for longer house than we currently do.

"We will have to review it and make a decision in the light of experience, but it is early days yet," he added.

Mr Cannon was unable to say whether any fines had been issued.
