NORDIC walking classes are taking place throughout Kirklees.

The special form of exercise, which uses more than 90% of the body’s muscles, is being introduced throughout the borough to get people walking and fitter.

It involves walkers using poles to exercise their upper body and reduce stress on knees and other joints.

The sessions are being run by the Kirklees Council.

Officials say Nordic walking is a different form of cardiovascular workout with the potential to burn up to 40% more calories than health walking.

It is suitable for people who already go walking.

Sessions are at 11am every Wednesday at the Galpharm Stadium Pool.

They are also at 10.30am on the first and third Thursdays at Spenborough Pool Reception, Cleckheaton, and at 1.30pm and on the first and third Tuesdays at Scissett WMC.

Further dates and locations will be added.
