Health workers are on the move in a bid to be closer to the community.

North Kirklees Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is currently based in an NHS building in Huddersfield.

But the group, which oversees GPs and community health for the north Kirklees area, plans to move to Dewsbury in the next few weeks.

The CCG is currently based in the large former NHS Kirklees premises in the Bradley area of Huddersfield, which it shares with Greater Huddersfield CCG and a number of other NHS support services.

But chief officer, Chris Dowse, confirmed to the Examiner that all 60 staff would be moving to Empire House in Dewsbury Town Centre.

The 1960s office block is already home to 150 Kirklees Council staff and new patients’ group Kirklees Healthwatch.

Ms Dowse said she felt it was vital that the CCG, which took over from NHS Kirklees following last April’s NHS shake-up, was based in the heart of its community.

And she vowed the move would actually save the CCG money.

She said: “We have always had a commitment as a new organisation that we wanted to move into our community because we’re not on our own patch at the moment.

“We’re a different sort of organisation than the primary care trust (NHS Kirklees) was.

“Our members are our 31 GP practices who are based in Dewsbury, Batley, the Spen Valley and Mirfield.

“It’s important to us that they have access to the building to come and go without being too disruptive to their other job of being a GP.

“It also means we’ll be in the same building as some of our partners such as Kirklees Council and Kirklees Healthwatch.

“The building is also across the road from Dewsbury Town Hall where we hold a lot of our public meetings.”

She added: “It’s not going to cost much at all.

“We’re taking all our desks and chairs with us and overall the cost of the lease will be cheaper than what we are paying now.

“Any spaces we leave in Huddersfield will be used by the other organisations in that building.”
