Work to replace gas mains in Holmfirth town centre has been postponed – to prevent disruption and harm to businesses in the Christmas run-up.

Northern Gas Networks had planned to replace 270m of gas mains beneath Dunford Road from the start of this week to November 24.

But work has been postponed until early next year, following concerns that traders would suffer, especially in the months leading up to Christmas.

It was decided to hold off work after a meeting with villagers and local businesses at Holmfirth Civic Hall.

During the first phase of the planned work Dunford Road, between The Phoenix Club and Da Vinci’s Pizza, would be reduced to one lane.

In the second phase there would be no access to Towngate or Victoria Square from Dunford Road and no access to Dunford Road from South Lane.

Access to Dunford Road and South Lane from Victoria Square and Towngate would remain as normal for the duration of the project.

Andrew Lambert, Construction Manager for NGN contractors, Amey, said: “We are working hard to minimise disruption to residents, businesses and motorists.”

An NGN spokesperson added: “From the feedback we received from residents and traders it was clear there were concerns about traffic during the lead up to Christmas. Therefore, we have rescheduled our work.
