NORTHERN Lights displays could illuminate the night sky over Britain as eruptions from the sun head towards earth.

There is a “good chance” of aurora sightings over the next few nights amid the largest solar storms in four years, the British Geological Survey (BGS) said.

People in Northern Ireland were able to spot displays of the Northern Lights (aurora borealis) when they appeared further south than usual earlier this week.

If skies are clear and the space activity peaks during the night, more UK sightings may be possible as a result of the solar storms, according to the BGS.

The unpredictable eruptions from the sun can also affect electrical power grids, communications systems and satellites.
