STARGAZERS in our area were given a fantastic treat with the appearance of the Northern Lights in our skies this week.

The aurora borealis isn't normally spotted as far south as us, normally being visible from Iceland and Norway, but unusual solar activity has made it possible for Cumbria, Yorkshire and much of Scotland to see the spectacular display.

Graham Brown who lives in the Holmfirth area was just one person to enjoy the show.

He said: "My partner Maureen woke me up at about three am on Tuesday morning and told me she could see the lights.

"I was suprised to see them.

"They were green and shimmered, almost like a pair of green curtains being blown by the wind."

He added: "We watched it for a about 10 or 15 minutes. If I knew they'd be that visible again I'd definitely try and see it."
