A CLUB has been granted an extended licence despite objections from residents about fighting and obscene sexual comments.
Councillors yesterday gave permission for Northorpe Working Men’s Club in Mirfield to stay open an extra hour at weekends and to serve alcohol from noon every day..
Kirklees Council’s Licensing Panel made the move to help the club stay afloat.
The club asked to be allowed to serve alcohol from midday rather than the current time of 7.30pm.
Club spokesman Richard Addinall told the panel that the Eastfield Road venue needed the extended hours. He said: “This would allow us to be properly licensed if someone wants to have a 25th wedding anniversary party on a Wednesday afternoon.”
The club also asked to be able to stay open until midnight instead of 11pm. But Mr Addinall said: “We don’t want to stay open until midnight every night. The club closes at 10pm at weekends because there aren’t enough customers.”
Eastfield Road resident Dr Warren Gillibrand had written to the panel to object to the licence extension. He wrote that a fight had spilled over into his garden during a christening celebration at the club in April.
Yesterday Dr Gillibrand said: “I’m concerned that if the club is open later every night it may encourage more of the problems that have happened in the past.”
Dr Gillibrand had also written to the council complaining of “obscene sexual comments” made by people outside the club during a strip show.
Yesterday he said: “We didn’t appreciate the fact that a striptease show was happening in the club at an early hour when our children were still playing outside.”
But Mr Addinall told the panel there would be no more strip shows.
“It wasn’t worth the expense,” he said.
Dr Gillibrand accepted that the club needed to stay open later. He said: “I don’t have a problem with the club as a club.
“We don’t want to see the club close because of lack of funds, but if there’s a function we’d like to see it policed so there isn’t disruption.”
The three-strong panel of councillors agreed that the club could open at noon every day and serve alcohol.
They gave the venue permission to serve alcohol until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays with half an hour drinking-up time. Closing hours between Sunday and Thursday will remain at 11pm.
