HOMEOWNERS have launched a petition against their neighbour’s plans to put two 14ft long polytunnels in his field to grow vegetables.

The field where Roger Cummings wants to put the large plastic tunnels backs on to houses on Oak Avenue in Meltham.

And John Butterworth – one of Mr Cummings’ neighbours – told the Examiner he believes they would become an “eyesore”.

Mr Butterworth, 59, said: “It’s an area of natural beauty with grass and trees growing around the border of the field.

“But he wants to put up 8ft high polytunnels which are 14ft wide which he says is for growing his own vegetables.

“We will be 20 feet away from them and it will spoil the area.”

Grandfather-of-five Mr Butterworth thinks the two polytunnels will be far too big to be used solely for home-growing.

He said: “They will be an eyesore and most people who live around here back on to it and are not pleased about it.

“I have started a petition against it and have about 30 signatures so far.”

But in his application to Kirklees Council’s planning department, Mr Cummings said he was trying to reduce his carbon footprint by growing his own produce in the field adjacent to his house.

He said in his application: “All three aspects of the planning proposal are temporary in nature.

“The aim in having the polytunnels is to grow our own vegetables.

“This may help reduce the shared carbon footprint in terms of food miles.”
