HUSBANDS, boyfriends, brothers, sons and granddads are being asked to Race For Life next month.

Brighouse Round Table has organised a men-only, five-kilometre to raise awareness of and cash for cancers that affect men.

The idea for the Round Table Run For It on Sunday, July 16, came from former Brighouse Round Table member David Earnshaw.

He said: "I have supported my wife during the women's Race For Life for the last few years and thought it would be a great idea to organise a men's run.

"On the day I will be running in memory of a close friend who recently died from cancer."

The event, which is being held in Greenhead Park, is in support of the Cancer Research UK charity, which aims to raise awareness of particularly prostate and testicular cancer.

The charity's community fundraiser, Katie Rawnsley, said: "A man is diagnosed with cancer about every four minutes and prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men.

"Testicular cancer is relatively rare, but it the most common cancer in men aged 15 to 45."

The course will be the same as the women-only Race for Life events, due to be held in the park next Saturday and Sunday.

Those two races will each attract 2,500 female runners - all racing in a bid to raise thousands of pounds for cancer charities.

Many of them will have had personal experiences of seeing people suffer and die from cancer.

Registration packs and sponsorship forms for the men's event are available by sending a cheque for £10 to Round Table Run For It, PO Box 80, Brighouse HD6 3WB.
