PUB landlord Tim Wood is so worried about the threat of a terrorist attack that he plans to build a nuclear bunker - under his car park.

Safety-conscious Tim has applied for planning permission to build the anti-terrorist bunker after receiving the Government's Preparing for Emergencies booklet this month.

Tim, who runs the Old Colonial pub in Mirfield, is so convinced that Britain will eventually be attacked by terrorists that he is leaving nothing to chance.

The married 46-year-old said: "The attacks on New York, Madrid and Bali show that nowhere is totally safe from terrorists. I think that is especially true after the Iraq war.

"It is inevitable that Britain will be hit at some point, probably sooner rather than later.

"Don't get me wrong, I don't think Mirfield will be top of the hit list for Al Qaeda. But why take the risk?

"The Government and police are always telling us we need to be more aware and protect ourselves better, so that's what I'm doing."

Tim's decision to build the bunker comes just days after it was announced that most people in the UK have not even read the Government's emergency booklet.

He has submitted plans for a 40ft by 20ft wide and 10ft deep underground shelter to Mirfield Council.

Tim is planning to have the anti- terrorist hideout fully lit and heated - at a estimated £10,000.

Two councillors from the Mirfield planning committee have already been round to look at Tim's blueprint and he is now waiting to see if he gains planning permission to build his shelter.

Mirfield councillor Keith Sibbald, 68, said: "I think he's got a good chance of getting the planning permission.

"It may seem a bit of a strange idea at first, but when you think about it anything is possible in this day and age. So why not?"

Clr Sibbald added: "Tim is known as being a bit of a character, so I wasn't really surprised when I heard his plans. Who knows, this might be the first of many applications we get?"

Tim added: "I'll have to check how many barrels of Tetleys I can fit in it.

"If the worse comes to the worse I may have to leave a few people out to make more room!"
