TRADE unionists will be debating the pros and cons of nuclear power at Huddersfield TUC's meeting tomorrow.

Kirklees Green Party councillor Andrew Cooper will be leading the discussion, which starts at 7.30pm in the Labour Rooms, 6 Cross Church Street, Huddersfield.

Clr Cooper, a Newsome ward representative, said: "It is important to discuss all aspects of nuclear power, such as the dangerous waste.

"Will it be expensive and only survive with taxpayer's subsidies? Is nuclear power the answer to climate change and the increase in energy consumption?"

Huddersfield TUC secretary Bob Stoker said: "Global warming is one of the greatest threats to the future of humankind and life on earth as we know it.

"But is nuclear power the solution?

"The Government's support for new nuclear power stations might divert resources from sustainable solutions."
