THE number of people killed in fires has dropped by a half.

New figures show seven people died in blazes in West Yorkshire in 2010/11 – down from 14 the year before.

Chief fire officer Simon Pilling said: “I know every firefighter would like there to be zero fire deaths but nevertheless this is a remarkable result.

“It shows the tremendous amount of community safety work we have pioneered over the past decade.

“There’s no doubt that without the hard work of my staff we would still be witnessing far too many unnecessary tragedies.”
