AN OAKES couple have celebrated their diamond wedding.

Albert and Pauline Berry married at St Stephen’s Church on July 8, 1950.

They met at a party held by Mr Berry’s parents for his brother Norman.

Mrs Berry had worked with the British Red Cross and sent parcels to Norman when he was in hospital following an accident.

The couple married two years later and made their home at Chiltern Avenue in Oakes.

Mr Berry served with the Royal Air Force for five years as an armourer.

He placed bombs on planes and worked on the famous bouncing bombs trials.

Mr Berry later spent 30 years working for David Brown Tractors.

Mrs Berry was one of the youngest women to be made an officer with the British Red Cross and worked in both St Luke’s Hospital and Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.

She started her career at Pat Martin’s mill in Lindley as a worsted mender.

In her 30s she retrained, completing a degree in catering at Huddersfield University and then working in the industry for 35 years.

The couple have two children, four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

They celebrated their anniversary by going on a mystery weekend away.
