AN elderly motorist is in a serious condition in hospital after a two-car crash in Marsh.

The woman, who is believed to be in her 80s, was driving a Vauxhall Corsa when it was in collision with another vehicle before hitting traffic bollards.

The crash happened on Westbourne Road shortly after midday today, near the busy parade of shops including KFC.

The injured woman was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary and was due to undergo a scan to confirm the nature of her injuries.

Police closed the road in both directions causing delays for motorists for most of the afternoon. The road is used as the main link road to the M62 and to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.

Mubdark Idris, 23, was working near by and told the Examiner: "We heard a woman had crashed outside.

"We looked out and people were helping her.

"There was a small red car with the front smashed in and a woman sitting inside.

"I don’t think she was trapped as the door was open and people were talking to her to check she was okay.

"I didn’t see anyone lying in the road.

"The car had hit a traffic island near the cash machines."

Huddersfield North NPT Inspector Mohammed Rauf told the Examiner: "An elderly woman has been taken to the Infirmary with unknown injuries.

"The road remained closed until the hospital confirmed her condition."
