ONE of Huddersfield's most well-known and admired jazz musicians has died.

Jazz fans joined friends and relatives to pack a memorial service for bass player Mally Kaye at Huddersfield Crematorium.

Mr Kaye, 72, of Thurstonland, was a musician for most of his life and was a regular on the jazz scene across West Yorkshire.

Other musicians paid tribute to him.

Dave Pogson, who played in the Wakefield Arms Band and Mally Kaye's Jump Band, said: "He was a real character on the jazz scene, but also a very talented musician.

"He was very much a traditional jazz man and everyone on the Huddersfield jazz scene knew Mally Kaye. He will be sadly missed."

Mr Kaye spent most of his life as a teacher.

In the years up to his retirement he taught history at Moor End High School, Crosland Moor.

He served in the Army and learned typing skills, which he used in later life to run classes.

But it was his love of music that dominated his life.

Over many years he played in a variety of bands.

They included The Kaye Four, an ensemble he foun- ded in 1985 and the Jump Band, which played regular slots at The George Hotel.

He also played with Dave Morrell's Jazz Band and the Wakefield Arms Band, who were regulars at the Wakefield pub of the same name.

His late brother Trevor was also a talented musician.
