GEORGE Akroyd, who has died at the age of 95, was a stalwart of St Thomas's Church, Bradley, from an early age.

From being a choirboy he progressed to a variety of roles serving the church he loved.

He was, at various times, Sunday school superintendent, churchwarden and treasurer.

In 1933 he became a lay reader at St Thomas's.

Mr Akroyd, who lived in Bradley Road, Bradley, spent most of his working life at the Huddersfield printing firm of Alfred Jubb and Son, St John's Road.

He and his wife Constance, who died about four years ago, had no children.

Together they shared a love of music.

Mr Akroyd was a pianist and organist and his wife a member of Huddersfield Choral Society.

Their friend Leslie Lyons re- called how the three of them enjoyed a regular Thursday singalong at the couple's house.

Mr Akroyd occasionally stood in as organist at St Thomas's.

In recent years he took to worshipping at Bradley Methodist Church until his health deteriorated.

Too old to join the forces in the Second World War, he served as a fireman, helping to tackle fires in bombed cities and towns across the north.
