COWLERSLEY man Oswald Clegg will be remembered for dedicating years of his life to charity work.

Mr Clegg, 93, known to family and friends as Ozzy, died on June 9.

He was a founder member and past president of Huddersfield Lions Club.

He dedicated 49 years of his life to the club.

Mr Clegg was born in Liversedge and grew up in Dewsbury.

At 16, he started work in the offices of W E Cotton and Sons at Slaithwaite. It was 1927 and the start of a long career in the textiles industry.

He worked for the cotton waste firm for 54 years in almost every department of the mill.

He finally retired in 1981 at the age of 70.

As well as his work with the Lions, Mr Clegg carried out other charitable work.

This included being a DJ for Huddersfield Hospitals' Broadcasts Association, now Huddersfield Hospital Radio, which provides a vital and valued radio service to hospital patients.

He started working with the association in 1966.

Mr Clegg leaves his wife of 65 years, 90-year-old Winifred.

The couple had two daughters, Brenda and the late Pauline.

He also leaves two grandchildren and three great-grandsons.

His funeral will be held at Huddersfield Crematorium on June 21 at noon.

Donations will be collected for the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
