A FORMER miner who devoted his life to his hobby of racing pigeons has died.

Mr Roy Harrison, 70, of Bankfield Court, Mirfield, was well-known throughout the pigeon racing world for much of his life. He was involved with local pigeon clubs.

Mr Harrison was born and raised in Wakefield.

He worked as a miner and later as a lorry driver.

Mr Harrison met his wife-to-be, Barbara, while 10-pin bowling in Wakefield. He was good at the sport and bowled all over the UK.

The couple married 28 years ago at Hopton United Reformed Church in Lower Hopton and moved to Mirfield.

Mr Harrison's National Service saw him serve with the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry in Germany.

His funeral was at the Hopton church last Friday, followed by cremation at Dewsbury Moor.
