A MAN who won a clutch of awards in Huddersfield cricket has died. Mick Saville, 66, played for Kirkburton, Holmfirth and Skelmanthorpe in his long career in the town.

And it was at Skelmanthorpe that he really made his mark.

He joined the club in 1990, just three years after they had joined the Drakes Huddersfield League, and was one of only 12 men who helped the first team to a hat-trick of titles in that glorious summer.

The club won the league’s Byrom Shield for heading the table, the Sykes Cup and the Examiner Mini Cricket trophy.

Mr Saville, of Fartown, grew up in Kirkburton and learned his cricket as a junior with the Riley Lane club.

He was a talented batsman in his young days but was also a more than useful bowler.

He had a short spell at Holmfirth after leaving Kirkburton, before moving to Skelmanthorpe and it was there he ended his career, playing with the second team.

Mr Saville was an engineer by trade and spent more than 35 years at the Holset factory in Huddersfield.

He leaves two children, Rebecca and Richard, and grandchildren Devon, Chelsea and Aidan.

A funeral service was held yesterday at Huddersfield Crematorium.
