A POLICEMAN was left with part of a metal bar sticking out of his neck after an attack at a hospital.

Another officer was bitten on his hand when trouble flared at Dewsbury District Hospital.

The two officers went to the hospital at 8pm last night after receiving reports that two patients had barricaded themselves into a unit and armed themselves with weapons.

The officers were containing the problem and waiting for more back-up when they were attacked.

One was struck with the bar - and part of it was left in his neck.

He was taken to Pinderfields Hospital at Wakefield for minor plastic surgery.

He also needed nine stitches in the wound.

The officer later went home.

Police arrested two men, aged 29 and 19.

Both live in the Dewsbury area.

They were being questioned at Dewsbury police station today.
