A council-run children’s daycare centre has been criticised by Government inspectors for ‘compromising children’s safety’.

The centre run by Kirklees Active Leisure at Batley Sports and Tennis Centre received the lowest rating of ‘inadequate’ in its latest Ofsted inspection.

While the centre was praised for providing an environment which its children enjoyed, it was criticised for its poor record keeping and ‘variable’ quality of teaching.

Kirklees Active Leisure is an arms-length group set up to run Kirklees sports centres.

An inspector, who visited the centre in June, said: “Practitioners are compromising children’s safety.

“This is because they do not maintain accurate daily records of children’s hours of attendance, to clearly show when the children are in their care.

“Practitioners are not recording sufficient information about the children and their parents and/or carers. This means they do not fully safeguard children...

“The quality of teaching is variable because there is sometimes a lack of focus when planning for younger children’s individual needs and progression.”

But the report added: “Children have safe and independent access to a varied range of resources. They are happy and enjoy their time at the club.

“Practitioners appropriately supervise children to ensure they play safely. Practitioners have regular supervisions with the manager, which provides opportunities for them to discuss their training needs.”

A spokesperson for Kirklees Active Leisure (KAL) said: “The Ofsted inspection took place on June 30, 2014 which highlighted some administrative procedures needed improving. These procedures were rectified with immediate effect at the time of the inspection and since the report was released on August 21, the highlighted areas for improvements have been made.

“Overall KAL feel that the majority of the Ofsted report for Batley Sports and Tennis Centre was positive highlighting children were happy and have safe and independent access to a varied range of resources which aims to children being active and healthy.

“Having observed various activities and also having met with staff, management and parents on the day, we feel that the inspector was given a full insight to the children’s activities at Batley Sports and Tennis Centre.”
