A TOILET and washroom station finally looks set to be built on the canalside at Slaithwaite.

Colne Valley Liberal Democrat Clr David Ridgway has welcomed a plan to provide improved canalside toilets for visitors and boaters.

Kirklees Council's Cabinet has given its support to the plan from British Waterways to provide a joint toilet and `amenity station'.

As well as improved toilets the amenity station will have a water point, wash-out facilities and a shower for canal boat users.

A final report will be brought back to the Cabinet following further negotiations on the details with British Waterways.

Clr Ridgway said: "Getting these improved facilities has been a long, and sometimes frustrating journey over a number of years.

"However, I am pleased that the closer working relationship with British Waterways has resulted in the proposals taking a significant step forward.

"Given the huge investment in the canal, the aspirations for the Slaithwaite part of the canal corridor to become part of the wider tourist and visitor attraction, and the need for improved local facilities, I am pleased that our perseverance as local members has paid off.

"We can look forward to a speedy conclusion to the finer details so that these new facilities can be provided as soon as possible."
