COMPUTER gaming is coming to Huddersfield.

A new internet café is set to open in the town's former Empire cinema - specialising in online gaming.

CyberNet, which opens tomorrow, will operate a membership scheme - providing subscribers with web browsing and email facilities as well as espresso coffee, muffins and comfy sofas.

The new business will also be a centre for computer gaming, with plans to form a Huddersfield team to compete with computer games players across the country.

The venture is being launched by Matthew Jones, who already runs the adventure game business LaserQuest at St John's Road, Birkby.

He said: "Computer gaming is emerging as a mainstream sport with national leagues and tens of thousands of pounds to be won for winning teams.

"We plan to form a Huddersfield gaming team and really put the town on the map by competing with the best computer game players out there."

And he added: "It's not just national glory that we're chasing.

"The World Gaming Championship was held in Korea last week and the German national team won this year.

"In a few years, perhaps players who started out in Huddersfield could be helping a British team lift the world championship."

CyberNet will provide 20 computer terminals and occupy 1,400sq ft of the former Empire cinema at the corner of John William Street and Brook Street, A launch party gets under way at 10am tomorrow when computer access and gaming will be free for the day and there will be competitions and prizes.

Examiner readers who bring a copy of the paper will also be offered free membership and one hour computer access credited to their account.

The centre will open from 10am to 10pm seven days a week.
