A REVAMPED Dewsbury Sports Centre has been reopened.

The centre is undergoing a £3m facelift and the first phase has now been completed.

The new centre was reopened by the Mayor of Kirklees, Clr Margaret Fearnley.

The refurbishment included building a new `changing village', a reception area, a cafe, spectators' balcony and offices.

The changing village is a replacement for the former changing rooms, which were knocked down and re-modelled as a unisex changing village.

There are eight family cubicles, two disabled cubicles - both containing toilets and one containing a shower - and 24 single cubicles.

The balcony overlooking the newly refurbished swimming pool hall has also undergone a major overhaul.

Further work to come will involve a revamped health suite with a new spa pool, sauna and steamroom.

A new 80-station fitness suite, a women-only gym and a youth gym are also included.

The chief executive of Kirklees Active Leisure, Terry Meehan, which runs the centre, said: "Since we reopened we have had a fantastic response from the public.

"They have been astonished at the transformation.

"We hope that over the next few weeks, all residents of Dewsbury - and beyond - can come and see what we have achieved in the sports centre and take advantage of it."
