AN opera singer is to walk from one hospice in Derbyshire to another in Huddersfield and perform two local concerts to raise money for both charities.

Janet Cowley will set off from Treetops Hospice in Risley on September 17 and walk 70 miles to Kirkwood Hospice in Huddersfield, where she will arrive on September 23.

The night before her journey she will lead a Concert for Treetops at Belper Congregational Church, starting at 7.30pm on September 16. She will perform a Concert for Kirkwood on her arrival in Huddersfield.

The Concert for Treetops is in memory of Helen Beechinor, an opera singer from Belper. Helen received care from Treetops Hospice and raised funds for the hospice during her treatment for breast cancer. She passed away in 2007 aged 40.

Janet, a friend and colleague of Helen from the Carl Rosa Opera Company, has set up the concert with the help of June Smith, who is Helen’s mum and a devoted volunteer at Treetops Hospice.

Janet will be joined by well-known local performers Trevor Fearn, Kathryn Fitchett, Patrick Dawson and by Barry Clark, another of Helen’s Carl Rosa colleagues. The accompanist for the evening will be Jill Fearn.

They will perform a programme of Gilbert and Sullivan, other light music and humorous pieces in an entertaining evening at Belper Congregational Church at 7.30pm on September 16.

Janet also has links with Kirkwood Hospice in Huddersfield, where her partner was cared for during his illness in 2001.

Concert for Treetops tickets are available from Marilyn at Treetops Hospice on 0115 9491264 or at £6 each.
