A MIRFIELD woman celebrated her centenary with a day of Pavarotti.

The Italian tenor is a favourite of Mrs Mary Gallon, so staff at St Luke's Hospital, Crosland Moor, where she is a patient, played many of his songs for her during the day.

Mrs Gallon, of Upper Hopton, was born in Nab Lane, Mirfield, in 1903 and started work at a local cotton mill at the age of 13.

She later worked as a dinner lady at Mirfield schools.

She married in 1932, but was widowed eight years later. She is seen with her daughter, Mrs Elizabeth Taylor, who joined the celebrations.
