PATIENTS in Huddersfield can now pick up organ donor forms from their GP surgery.

Half a million forms have been sent to GPs throughout the UK in response to public demand.

Research has shown that people expect to be able to pick up such leaflets at their doctors' reception area, but often find they are out of stock.

A spokeswoman for NHS UK Transplant, the authority responsible for organ donations, said: "While 90% of the public say they support organ donation only 11.6m - 19% of the population - have registered their wish to help others after their deaths.

"While people are willing to register as donors many do not know where to get a form," she added.

Nearly 6,000 people in the UK are waiting for an organ transplant.

But the critical shortage of donor organs means under 3,000 are carried out each year.

Last year, 443 people died while waiting for an organ.
