Sufrisa, aged 10, lives in Lamlumpu in Banda Aceh - one of the areas worst-affected by the tsunami.

She was playing outside her home when the tidal wave struck on Boxing Day last year.

She and her brother and sister escaped - but their father died trying to rescue their paralysed mother, who also perished in the disaster.

Sufrisa and her siblings were orphaned, but thanks to Unicef they now have a home and are back at school.

Sufrisa said: "When I remember my father and mother I get very sad and very upset."

However, she is now able to look to the future.

She said: "Some days I want to be a photographer, but others I'd like to be a policewoman or a doctor."

Mufizar Mahmud, a Unicef communications worker in Banda Aceh, added: "Sufrisa amazed us with her strength and resilience."
