A COUPLE marked their diamond wedding anniversary by helping others.
William and Ruby Hardcastle, of Leafield Close, Sheepridge, asked friends and relatives to make donations instead of sending cards or presents.
The happy couple, pictured now and on their wedding day, raised £387 for the West Yorkshire Forget me Not Trust which wants to build a children’s hospice in Brackenhall.
Mr and Mrs Hardcastle, who received a card from the Queen, were married in Maltby, South Yorkshire.
It was Mrs Hardcastle’s home town and she met her husband to be when he took up a plumbing training course after seven years in the Army.
They moved to Huddersfield shortly after the wedding and Mr Hardcastle, now 85, worked for Huddersfield Corporation.
He also held jobs at chemical firms ICI and LB Holliday before retiring.
His wife, 80, worked in a Huddersfield bakery, as a home help and as a dinner lady at local schools.
The couple have four children, nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
They celebrated with parties for family and friends in Huddersfield and in Maltby.
