RESIDENTS have helped transform their estate.

About 130 homes in Brackenhall have been given a facelift by Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing (KNH).

And the residents of Crest Hill Road, Bracken Grove, Trafalgar Close, Hopkinson Road and Leeside Avenue were closely involved in the revamp, officially unveiled on Thursday.

With Loca, the Kirklees art and regeneration group, they helped choose six colours for the exterior painting and also the design of new gates.

Walls, fences and canopies were also added to the properties.

Loca member Lee Morgan presented a scrapbook to residents.

KNH housing officer Gail Lomax said: “There’s a really positive mood among tenants and residents now – a real sense of community spirit and a sense of ownership.

“Historically, this area hasn’t been very popular, but now we’ve got no empty houses and there’s a waiting list of people wanting to move here.”

Margaret Lees of the local tenants’ and residents’ association also welcomed the changes.

She said: “The improvements have made a tremendous difference to the overall look of the area.” T

The refurbishment is designed to help the new housing blend in with older homes. The work was jointly-funded by KNH and regeneration group the Deighton-Brackenhall Initiative.
