A Brighouse school is doing an outstanding job of looking after the 39 troubled boys living there.

The management and leadership at the William Henry Smith School in Boothroyd Lane, were also rated as top notch by Ofsted following its recent inspection.

Inspectors gave the school an overall rating of Good, adding that students could improve further in writing.

However, in general they were full of praise for the small school which caters for up to 54 boys with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties.

The report stated: “Residential provision is outstanding. Students feel well cared for and nearly always say they are supported exceptionally well to achieve their very best.

“The therapy department’s leadership is innovative in its approach and an outstanding feature of the provision, as staff consistently drive to remove barriers to students’ learning.

“Some students gain outstanding personal achievements due to the tremendous support that they receive from experienced, well-trained staff.

“The quality of the leadership by the principal (Brendan Heneghan) is outstanding. He ensures that the spiritual, moral, social and cultural aspects of the overall provision are continuously improving the lives of the students.

“The leadership and management of students’ behaviour are outstanding.”

School and governors were extremely please with the report.

A school spokesman said: “The school is extremely proud and delighted to have received such a good report.

“We have initiated some pretty significant changes and developments in the last few years and are delighted that these have been recognised so positively.”
