SOME of the region’s finest singers, musicians and performers will visit Huddersfield this week.

And one who deserved that accolade is Bethany Grange, from Birkenshaw, who was one of yesterday’s happy winners at the Mrs Sunderland music festival.

She won the prepared reading, school year 6 and under class, with an extract from a book called Kensuke’s Kingdom.

It’s the second time the 11-year-old, who goes to drama school Stage 84, has won first place in the class.

The Birkenshaw Middle School pupil said: “I’ve read the book and I think it’s quite good.

“I’m very happy that I’ve won and I am going to enter again next year.”

The Festival kicked off on Friday with a programme packed full of competitors.

Unfortunately, some of Sunday’s classes were cancelled because of the snowy weather, but festival vice chairman David Hirst said the show must go on.

He said: “We had vocal classes over the weekend as well as percussion classes.

“On Saturday the drumming classes were very popular and attracted a very big crowd.

“This week starts with the piano and speech and drama classes.”
