Work is well under way to revamp Huddersfield’s Packhorse Centre to give it a whole new look.

And additional tenants are being lined up to take space in the 43-year-old shopping centre following its £2m facelift.

Latest pictures show the clean, new frontage of the former Walmsley’s furniture store at the corner of Kirkgate and Cross Church Street, which is being split into two units – ground floor and first floor.

Work has included fitting new windows for the first floor unit as well as fire doors and a balustrade.

The Kirkgate entrance to the shopping mall is also being upgraded – with work set to switch to the King Street entrance and later the entrance at Market Place.

The centre, owned by London-based real estate investment trust NewRiver Retail, which has 29 shopping centres in the UK and Northern Ireland. has already seen significant changes.

Department store Peters set the ball rolling by leaving its long-time home fronting King Street to occupy the former Argos store and RSPCA charity shop next door at the Kirkgate end of the mall. The three-storey premises vacated by Peters is to be split into four separate retail units.

The shopping centre revamp – complete with new signs and logos – will also see the creation of a food court – called the Packhorse Kitchen – on the first floor gallery and former gym space. A balcony will be created for diners to enjoy views over the town centre.

Packhorse centre manager David Heathcote-Smith said: “There are a thousand and one things going on at the moment. We have offers from a number of parties and we will be launching a new pop-up shop, too.” Mr Heathcote-Smith said he hoped to provide more details of progress within the next two weeks.
