A PENSIONER has refused to withdraw a road safety petition.

Christine Pearcy, 73, collected 330 names to a petition opposing changes to the junction of Clough Lane and Church Street in Paddock.

Kirklees Council installed a metal crash barrier at the site, forcing older people and parents with pushchairs to walk on the road.

Mrs Pearcy submitted the petition in July after being left unhappy about the changes.

And earlier this month James Leeming from the council’s highways department wrote to her asking her to withdraw the petition so that action could be taken more quickly.

But Mrs Pearcy said she would not withdraw the petition, and demanded to know what the council was going to do to resolve the road safety issue.

“I spoke to James Leeming and he couldn’t give me any proof of what the council were going to do,” Mrs Pearcy said.

“I would be letting down the people who signed the petition if I withdrew it.

“It would be silly of me to drop it.”

A council spokeswoman said: “We have written to Mrs Pearcy and confirmed that we will be acting on her concerns but will be able to do this much more quickly if the petition is withdrawn.

“It can be lengthy and costly to take reports to the council’s Cabinet and withdrawing the petition will speed up the process of making the changes she has requested.

“We will be contacting her again to talk through the issue.”
