PUB licensees Melvyn Charles and Janet Ridsdale are the toast of the town after winning an industry award.

The pair, licensees of the Airedale Heifer on Stocks Bank Road, Battyeford, received a Punch Taverns Shine Award in the category for Best Community Experience.

Judges from Punch were so impressed with Melvyn and Janet's entry they went on to crown them Shine Awards Champion for the region.

The couple now progress to the national final, along with 15 other Punch licensees, to compete for a £1,000 top prize plus a two-week luxury holiday.

Melvyn and Janet, who have been running the Airedale Heifer for six-and-a-half years, said the win was completely unexpected.

Melvyn said: "I was lost for words when they announced the Airedale Heifer as a category winner.

"And just as that news was starting to sink in they said I was also going to represent the region in the grand final.

"The Airedale Heifer is a traditional village pub and we have worked hard to establish a respectful, family atmosphere that happily accommodates customers of all ages."

Melvyn and Janet's Community Experience award celebrated the contribution their pub has made to the village.

The pub has an extensive programme of activities, sporting events and fundraising events for various charities.

It also has its very own racehorse, owned by a syndicate of customers.

A number of sporting clubs are run from the pub. They include two football teams and two netball teams, as well as darts and pool teams.

The pub's golf society has 47 members, who meet eight times a year to compete against each other and raise money for charity.
