A NEW exhibition heading to Huddersfield is to profile the work of Pakistani artists.

Infinite Terms of Reference, which opens at the Public Art Gallery on Saturday, features the work of three generations of contemporaryPakistani artists.

The exhibition features over 60 works from more than 20 artists who have been closely associated with the National College of Arts in Lahore and centres in Karachi and Islamabad.

The work explores the richness and diversity that has made such an impact on the international mainstream art world.

Contemporary Pakistani art works are exhibited in museums and galleries in Japan, Berlin, New York, Chicago and Amsterdam, as well as the UK.

The exhibition, which runs until Saturday April 22, is on loan from the Bradford Museums, Galleries and Heritage Service.

This has developed close links with artists and art organisations in Pakistan over the past decade, resulting in a number of exhibitions.

The present exhibition includes a cosmopolitan range of work, from traditional miniatures to large-scale paintings.

Mediums used range from charcoal to oils, watercolours, gouache and traditional vegetable dyes.

There is also the whimsical use of Western icons alongside traditional Mughal representations.

Robert Hall, Kirklees Council's principal visual arts officer, said: "Infinite Terms of Reference is not a comprehensive study of contemporary practice.

"But it provides a flavour of the immense strides artists have made in a small period in the country's relatively short history."

Admission is free and the exhibition runs from 10am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, and 10am to 4pm on Saturdays.
